10 Largest Coal Producing Country in the World, Indonesia is on the list?

Coal is still one of the world's main energy sources, especially for power plants and heavy industry. Although the issue of clean energy transition continues to be raised, global coal production in 2026 stay high, dominated by several countries with large reserves and mining capacity. So, which countries are the largest coal producers in the world, and where Indonesia is located? Here's the review.

List 10 Largest Coal Producing Country in the World (2026)

Based on annual coal production data 2026 which is quoted from globalfirepower.com, The following are the ten countries with the highest coal production volumes in the world:

RankCountryCoal Production (2026)
1China4.805.000.000 ton
2India1.020.000.000 ton
3Indonesia783.453.000 ton
4United States of America534.234.000 ton

1. China, The Giant of World Coal Production

China occupies the top position with a very large margin from other countries, achieve more than 4,8 billion tons per year. This figure reflects China's large domestic energy needs to support the industrial sector, manufacturing, and power plants that still rely heavily on coal.

2. India is in Second Position

India follows in second place with production of approx 1 billion tons. Rapid economic growth and continuously increasing electricity needs mean that India maintains a large scale of coal production, although this country is also encouraging the development of renewable energy.

3. Indonesia Ranks Third in the World

Indonesia managed to enter the top three in the world with production reaching more than 783 million tons of coal. This position emphasizes Indonesia's important role as one of the main global coal suppliers, especially for export needs to Asian countries such as China and India, as well as to meet domestic energy needs through Domestic Market Obligations (DMO).

Most of Indonesia's coal production comes from the Kalimantan and Sumatra regions, with the support of heavy equipment such as excavators, dump truck, and bulldozers which operate intensively in the mining area every day.

As quoted from the journal “THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF RESEARCH-BASED INDONESIAN COAL UTILIZATION“, For the last forty years, Indonesia's energy consumption is highly dependent on fuel oil. To meet increasing domestic energy needs, most of the national coal reserves need to be diversified into briquettes, synthetic oil, synthetic gas, as well as various non-fuel products or other chemical products.

4. United States of America

Around 534 million tons, supported by coal mines in the Appalachia and Wyoming regions.

5. Russia

Around 531 million tons, with most of the production exported to the Asian region.

6. Australia

Around 445 million tons, known as one of the world's largest exporters of coking coal.

7. South Africa

Around 239 million tons, is the backbone of the southern African region's energy sector.

8. Kazakhstan

Around 120 million tons, with considerable coal reserves in the Central Asian region.

9. German

Around 109 million tons, although it continues to decline in line with the European Union's energy transition policy.

10. Poland

Around 96 million tons, still relies on coal as the main energy source.

Why Indonesian Coal Production Remains High?

There are several factors that make Indonesia consistently at the top of the world's coal producing countries, among them:

● Abundant coal reserves, especially in East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and South Sumatra.

● High export demand from Asian countries, especially China and India.

● Domestic energy needs continue to increase along with industrial and population growth.

● Mining infrastructure support, including an adequate fleet of heavy equipment for excavation activities, transportation, and coal processing.

Conclusion

From the data above, It can be concluded that Indonesia is not only on the list of the largest coal producing countries in the world, but also ranked third globally, under China and India. This shows the large contribution of the coal mining sector to the national economy, both in terms of exports and domestic energy fulfillment.
